History
Our Rationale for History at St. Urban's.
"A people without the knowledge of their past history, origin and culture is like a tree without roots". Marcus Garvey
At St. Urban’s we aim to stimulate children’s interest and understanding about the life of
people who lived in the past and ways in which it differs from the present. We believe that
learning about the past helps children to make sense of the world in which they live and to
develop analytical thinking.
At St. Urban’s we believe that the study of history makes a valuable contribution to
children’s understanding of all aspects of life giving a sense of identity and heritage.
As part of their work on Florence Nightingale, Year 2 have had a Very Important Visitor to the classroom - none other than Florence Nightingale herself! Florence had travelled through time to share lots of exciting facts about her life and work. The children learnt about her early childhood, and how she was always so caring to people and animals. They also discovered she looked after many wounded soldiers during the Crimean War and made a significant difference to the conditions in the hospitals.
The children particularly enjoyed having a go at being nurses themselves by looking after the injured bears. The children asked some very thoughtful questions and really impressed Florence with their knowledge too!
Well done Year 2 and thank you, Florence, for your visit to us!
Year 3 had an enjoyable and informative visit to Meanwood Farm. They went to find out about Prehistory - living as people of the Stone Age, making shelters, attempting to use flint to make fire, grinding flour, making wattle and daub walls, making thread and looking after the animals. A great insight into life during the Stone Age.
Year 4 have been studying the Viking Era and have been making their own Viking shields.
Thank you to Charis in Year 1 for sharing her wonderful Remembrance Day artwork she did at home.
Throughout the school we have been finding out about Queen Elizabeth's reign as a Monarch. We have been enquiring about the Queen's life, including her achievements, her family and the decades through which she has been Queen. Here are some examples of what we have done so far...
Who Inspires You? We asked this question to everyone across the school and some fabulous, informative research was made about some historical (and more recent) figures we admire.
