Physical Education

Promoting Activeness to Develop Happiness

P.E at St Urban’s, has at its core, the intention of encouraging a desire in every child to lead an active and healthy lifestyle. We want them to know and understand that their health and well-being can be enormously enhanced as a direct result of their levels of activity, and through participation in competitive and non-competitive sports and activities. We want all of our children to be as active as possible.

By implementing the key fundamental skills of physical activity in every lesson, through a range of solo and team activities/sports, children will develop their understanding of physical literacy. The curriculum will offer them a wide range of traditional sports as well as opportunities to engage with sporting pursuits they are less likely to engage within everyday life. It will help them to improve their motivation, confidence, physical competence, knowledge and understanding that provides children wit the movement foundation for lifelong participation in physical activity.

We want our provision for Physical Education to have a positive impact upon both the physical and mental well-being of all of our children, allowing them to flourish into confident and happy individuals.

The ideas outlined above are brought together, in the ethos of our physical education here at St Urban’s, through the message that we are:

Promoting Activeness to Develop Happiness.

Academic Year 2024 - 25

We want to build upon that love of sport and provide our children with every opportunity to play and be active again this year. With the Women’s Rugby World Cup taking place in England and the legacy of Team GB’s fantastic medal haul at this summer’s Olympic Games, it is a fantastic time for sport. This is something we will be emphasising at every opportunity across school this year at St Urban's.

The P.E challenges homework scheme will be up and running again and competition will hopefully be fierce amongst the classes. This is a great opportunity to get the whole family involved in some physical activity.

Also the Leeds Rhinos Foundation will be contributing their expert sports coaches for P.E sessions in school. In addition, we look forward to working with Active Schools, Leeds Well Schools Partnership and 2Touch Football as well as the Leeds Skipping School again this year.

Our wide range of extra-curricular activities across the different year groups in school offer our children the opportunity to try something new and the possibility to compete in their discipline. Last year, our Under 11s Tag-rugby team lost in the final on the Leeds Rhino’s pitch at Headingley stadium, a selection of KS2 children won the Leeds Panathlon and the U11s squad finished second in the Catenian Cup, the greatest ever finish in the history of the school. Hopefully these successes can be built upon this year. Details of how our extra-curricular clubs are getting on can be found below.

Please ensure you have made yourself aware of when your child will be required to attend school in their P.E kit. (This will change on a half-termly basis).

Year 5 and 6 children enjoyed their chance to see the opening match of the Women's Rugby League World Cup at Headingley Stadium. England were comfortable winners against Brazil 72:4. Hopefully, they can go all the way!

Year 4 children attended a 'Come and Try' tag-rugby event at West Leeds Rugby Club. The day, organised by the Leeds Rhinos Foundation, was a fun and friendly introduction to tag-rugby..
